We are thrilled to have The Downtown Band returning to the stage at the Valentine’s Grand Dance again this year! This non-stop 10-piece band keeps the party going all night long. From classics to today’s hits, this group knows how to get everyone on the dance floor.
The band leader, Justin Caldwell, is an accomplished vocalist, songwriter, and composer. Caldwell has toured internationally in over 30 countries as a solo entertainer, and written award-winning original music for film and TV including Nike, Visa, Honda, Curves, and Tylenol, as well as for popular children’s books including Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein. Check out our Q + A with Justin to find out more about the band, their accomplishments and why they are returning to Homestead for a second time!
Q: What was the best part of performing at the Grand Dance last year, and what are you looking forward to this year?
A: Last year’s Grand Dance was a blast because everyone who was there was excited to party! Sometimes we play big events and aren’t sure what the attitude of the guests will be like. From the moment we stepped foot on stage the dance floor was packed. If I weren’t on stage, I would’ve LOVED to have been a guest at that party.
Q: What makes Homestead Manor such a fun place to perform?
A; Homestead is so cool because you feel like you’ve taken over an upscale barn in the middle of nowhere. It truly feels like a luxury country getaway where you can really let loose and forget the big city for a night.
Q: What are some of your favorite songs to perform around Valentine’s Day?
A: There are so many! Love songs are king in popular music, so you’ll hear songs from “Build Me Up Buttercup”, to “Thinking Out Loud” (Ed Sheeran), to fun love songs like “Shut Up and Dance.”
Q: What’s your favorite place you have performed?
A: My favorite place we’ve performed is the Sporting Club in Monte Carlo, Monaco. We opened for Elton John, Sting, Enrique Iglesias, Seal, Lana Del Ray, Robin Thicke, Tom Jones, and many others, and performed for the Prince and Princess of Monaco on that stage.
Q: Who has been your favorite person to meet or open for?
A: My favorite person to open up for and get to hang out with was definitely Sting. He’s my favorite artist of all time, and meeting him was truly an honor. I asked him if he needed a background singer for the night but he told me “why don’t you sing from backstage tonight.” So close.
Q: What would be your dream place to perform?
A: I’d love to have The Downtown Band perform in Hawaii. We’ve been invited to perform in France, Monaco, Mexico, Florida Keys and many other lovely destination locations, but Hawaii is still my favorite. I’d love to be able to bring the talent and showmanship of The Downtown Band out there for awhile! 2018 maybe?!
